New York Times: Preview and Interview onThe Nubian Word for Flowers

When she died, she was nearly finished with a surreal work of music theater that combined these interests: what she and her creative partner and spouse, Carole Ione Lewis, called a “phantom opera” about the interaction of the Nubian culture in Africa with the forces of colonialism. Completed over the past year by a team of Ms. Oliveros’s longtime collaborators, “The Nubian Word for Flowers” will have its premiere on Thursday, Nov. 30, at Roulette in Brooklyn.
